Hello,
I was just wondering what brands of nutrients everyone prefers around here.I have fermax right now(its all they sell at teh local brew shop.

Does anybody know of one thats close to the formulas that roger morse used?

Hey dude,

Fermaid K is very similar in composition to that of the formula devised by Morse and Steinkraus in around 1966.

The mead nutrient put out by the Beverage People in California was designed following Morse's formula, making substitutes for ingredients that weren't available.

You won't find the connection with Morse from reading the web site -- I got this straight from Byron Burch in a phone conversation a few years back. He's happy with it, and uses in his own meadmaking, including the ones that won the AHA Meadmaker of the year award.

A few caveats, however. Morse and Steinkrause first developed and tested this formula during the 1960's. Much has been researched since that time. There are other yeast nutrient formulas on the market now, such as Fermaid K which Oskaar mentioned, which will work just as well or even better.

ya i decided on go-ferm for the starter and fermaid k for the must. sound like a good plan?

Yeah, I think you'll be very happy with the performance of the yeast using the rehydration nutrient (GoFerm) and then the general growth nutrient (Fermaid K).

I use them in just about every batch of mead I make, and in my winemaking now as well. I like the results I get in the fermentation.

Just remember to aerate daily for at least the first three days. It pays to consider oxygen a nutrient during that time and the yeast will reward you with a good, clean fast ferment and no off flavors when you couple the oxygenation/aeration and good nutrient dosing.
