View Full Version : Last bottle in a batch?

What do you do with the last bottle of a batch of mead or wine? If it's good, I hold on to it for a long time.

Yesterday, after my Dad's Funeral, I was in the cellar looking for something to raise a glass of in honor of him. Saw my last bottle of my '88 OB mead sitting there gathering dust. I think I drank the second to last bottle about 8 or so years ago.

I didn't take notes, cause I was with a group of people. But WOW it was awesome. Complex, rich, wonderful mouth feel, long follow. It was a good bottle to open. I didn't even mind sharing it with 5 other people (much). It did get comments like "I didn't know mead good be this good!" "This is mead? Wow"

Sorry to hear of your loss. How wonderful to have such a tribute of your own making.

P.S. As to your question, as a new brewer (just about a year now), I find myself wanting to not finish out a batch without fanfare. I find it difficult to deal with 1 gallon batches for this reason. Too few bottles in the batch to treasure the last few! I have a nice place in the basement that is well temp controlled so I think I will be able to keep some bottles back to enjoy in the long ahead future.

thank you, Leonora. It's been a tough couple of weeks.

This was the last bottle of a 3 gallon batch. I drank the first 10 bottle very quickly then slowed way down for the remaining 5.

I rarely do a batch less than 5 gallons these days.
