View Full Version : What were Viking and/or medieval meads like?

Total newbie here, so please forgive my ignorance. I tried looking for this info on my own, here and elsewhere, but to no avail.

I am wondering what the meads of medieval Europe and the Vikings might have been like? Would any of them been carbonated or sparkling, or would they normally be still? Would they be more comparable to a beer or ale, or to a wine? What would a typical alcohol level be (if there is a "typical")?

Are there any commercially available meads that approximate the meads of the medieval or Viking periods?

And in general, is the honey in most meads (of any period or style) actually noticeable in the flavor of the drink, or is the honey only there to provide the sugar for fermentation? What would be a good way for a noob like me to get started with mead drinking- some good basics to try?
