View Full Version : Bucket retaining smells

I bought a 5 gallon bucket of honey from Dutch Gold which I am happy with. I transfered the honey to a "honey bucket" I bought from a beekeeping catalog with a special honey gait, just to make it easier to portion it in the future - the ladle technique was too messy and time consuming. I assume the bucket the honey came in originally is food grade plastic and I could use it for fermenting with some modification so I cleaned it out last night. Gave it a little scrub with soap and hot water then I filled it with 4 gallons of water and added Easy Clean and let is sit a little while after swishing it around a lot. This morning after it was dried I noticed it still has a strong honey smell. Is that typical or did I just not clean it well enough? It just has me concerned that the plastic fermenter, if they retain smells, will transfer flavors of one mead batch to the next.

I did use the search tool, thanks, but I did not come across that post or any other about retain smell. So I guess the short answer to me question is - Yes they can retain smells. The Easy Clean solution I used is supposed to be just like oxyclean, maybe I just did not leave it to soak long enough or make it more concentrated. Thanks again.

Just for reference, when I'm trying to purge smells from my plastic buckets, I use a full measure (the cup that is included with the package) of OxiClean dissolved in 5 gal of warm water, and I allow the mixture to soak in the bucket overnight before swishing it around as I dump it out. The smells take longer to oxidize out than the other residual gunk from fermentation and/or storage.
