I've brewed beer for a number of years and clear bottles are avoided like the plague to prevent the beer from being light struck. Is this the case with meads as well? I like the idea of a clear bottle for presentation but don't want to put the quality of the mead at risk.

The "light struck" effect in beer comes from a reaction of one of the constituents in hops to UV light from the sun. It breaks down into a chemical that gives the beer a "skunky" aroma. It is OK to store traditional meads in clear bottles, although for other reasons many metheglins as well as dark fruit melomels are best also kept out of UV light.

Over time, traditional meads will also suffer the "wet cardboard" or "skunkiness" from exposure to UV light as well. It's best to keep your meads in colored bottles and out of any direct light. Those you keep in clear bottles should be kept in the dark until you're ready to serve them.
