Hope this doesn't sound too stupid, but here goes.
When taking hydrometer readings of my beer (and fuel since I work with that also) the hydrometer does not move up after it has been put in and twirled. This may seem like a dumb question but the last couple of meads I have had when I take a reading there is so much air in the wine thief that I take a reading then watch the hydrometer move up about .008 to .010.
So do I take the first reading, is the moving caused by all of the air bubbles that I see floating or do I wait until it has re-settled. That seems to go against my training as you are supposed to twirl it so that it doesn't get "stuck", then after a twirl it sits for a couple secs, then raises... ???
