Quite interesting.
I read the book "Judgment of Paris" and really enjoyed it. When the movie Bottle Shock came out, I was disappointed that they barely mentioned Mike Grgich - the man primarily responsible for the winning Chardonnay. I guess that little fact just didn't fit into the story they wanted to tell.

Glad to see that Mike Grgich's efforts are given proper credit for those award winning CH. Montelena wines.
BTW, you all do know what famous Gotmead personality comes from one of those Croatian winemaking families, right?

With a title like that there is no way I would not watch that video. Although I'm not a huge wine fan myself, it was pretty entertaining.
I'm not either, slowbie--in fact I don't like wine at all (sorry, Pete ;D) or beer, for that matter. But I find the whole process of making it fascinating from a scientific perspective, and from my artistic side too. I've always wanted to dicker around with it, and mead gives me the chance to do that, actually producing something I don't mind drinking.
And I naturally enjoy it when the Yanks outperform the Europeans.

I couldn't agree more. That's why I was so happy when I found out what mead really is beyond vikings and the middle ages (although I must admit that it was the historical aspect that got me to learn about it in the first place).
Mike is a real character and the movie would have been excellent with his story as the centerpiece, but some people just don't want the truth to come out because it undermines their version/propaganda.
It's a shame that most people who saw the film will never know the real story or the kind of effort that Mike put into making that Chardonnay. The good news is that Croatian winemakers are really making a mark on the wine world not only in Croatia and California, but also in Australia, Argentina and New Zealand.
I know nothing about the politics of that whole thing...guess I'll have to read the book!

The benefit of all the dumb rules and regulations is that it makes it easy for people to know what type of wine to expect from a specific region, and it also increases that regions fame because of it. But for the individual producer, this sucks bigtime as it limits creativity development, and also makes it difficult to distinguish your wines from your neighbour.
A good example of this, is the fact that after reading this thread I'm all curious about croatian wines, and am all curious about what to expect from wines from different regions in croatia even though that kind of contradicts the reason as to why I would be interested in the first place.
