Has anyone else made this and had trouble with the primary fermentation taking off?. Started 2/14/10 and still not bubbling or "getting the party started!" The Mead Mamas got together today and made this mead pyment with a variety of yeasts and juices. Hopefully we will "bee" enjoying the fruits of our "labor" in 5 weeks.:rolleyes::);)

First off, if you haven't checked the gravity then you can't be 100% sure that it's not fermenting. Sometimes you won't be able to see visible signs of activity and even just a tiny air leak will prevent your airlock from bubbling.

That being said, if it really hasn't started fermenting at all then the first thing I would check is to make sure that the grape juice you used didn't have any preservatives. I think I remember seeing that sorbate and benzoate are two to look out for.

If that's what happened, if you go down to post 13 on this thread it will give you some good instructions on what you can do.

Otherwise, some possible problems are your temperature being outside the yeast's range or pitching when the must was too hot (if you heated it at all).

Welcome to GotMead MeadMama!

I'm curious what you mean by making it with a variety of yeasts and juices. Exactly what did you put together?
Do you see any signs of small bubbles on the surface of the liquid?
Did you check the starting gravity? and the current gravity?
This info will help us to understand what is happening.

And do watch those puns. Your delivery could stirrup a wave of punsters that will breech your thread. If you're lochia, they'll just do a little cuttingup a-cording to GotMead tradition.

joe's pyment experiment

Three of us mead mamas got together and made joe's recipe a variety of ways. Some used 3 gallon carboys for the one gallon recipe, some used a 2 gallon bucket. (Carboy seemed to do better in this instance). Some used D47 yeast and some used EC-118. (No difference to tell yet). One person used the 3 gallon carboy with pure fruit juices and that sems to be the best yet as far as active fermentation. We all did use goferm and yeast nutrients at the start. €hose of us who had the 2 gallon buckets and the welches grape juice had to re-pitch some yeast (there was 3 of us who had to do that!). SG 1.141. It will be interesting in 5 weeks. We will get together for some taste testing!
