There are probably literally hundreds of thousands of bass players that are better than Geddy, heck, I'm pretty more or less on par/better than him myself (more of a 6 stringer though, but I can rock a good bass, fretted or without). He's not really a shredder, just plays well, good sense of groove, very good ability to play complex rhythms while singing a different rhythm, and most of all - an absolutely stellar songwriter.:)

Hah. As soon as a I saw your link, I thought to myself, "this better be a Victor Wooten video"...

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are one of my favorite bands ever, and Victor truly is a magnificent bassist.

Check out this tune (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWNiFw_W3mA) for some real funky beats.

I dabble a bit in strings myself, but play guitar most of the time.

I am a huge Medeski, Martin & Wood fan, and Chris Wood is also an amazing bassist, especially on upright. Whether you like jazz or not, check out this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuCXJlfeq7I).

Les Claypool can really thump a bass... "Tommy the Cat" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4P_OofC3xM) cannot be denied.

I think the last time I went to North Carolina on purpose was to see the Flecktones play Green Acres in the late 90's. They had just hired Jeff Coflin (sp) and I was a big Howard Levy fan. Jeff did his double-saxophone thing, and so I decided to give him a chance. I still like Howard more, he did piano and harmonica at the same time, very well. Jeff is a one-trick pony. I also saw my first and only convincing UFO there. Good times.

I think we are on the same page.

+1 for Victor. I've been a fan since '94
Played a little jazz bass myself back in college

I saw them in 94 at the Roxy in ATL. I was a sophomore in HS. By 95, it was all Phish, fattie grilled cheese, fatty veggie burrito, fatty dank beer, fatty fat fat, miracles, cops, patchoulie, sage, et cetera.
