View Full Version : Unsure if this is infected or wine yeast just looks this way

Hey Gotmead,

On Saturday I made this mead kit, picture below, is that normal for wine yeast to look like that? I am mostly a beer brewer used to the thick krausen, this is my first 5 gal batch of mead. I have only done (2) 1Gal JAOM's. The mead is at 68 degrees constant right now... The fruit puree goes in after (2) weeks so at this point its only honey/nutrients in the carboy.

Kit - Apricot Peach Melomel

Melomel is a mead fermented or flavored with fruit.

This Melomel features 15 lbs of honey, 3 lbs of Apricot puree and 3 lbs of Peach Puree to produce a golden hued fruit infused concoction that will have your friends inviting you back for more.

We chose our BA-11 dry yeast strain as it is known in white wine making to bring out Apricot and Peach aroma's.

Dry Yeast Recommendation:
BA11: Apricot and peach esters with good mouthfeel

Hey Khillian. Welcome to the forum!

That does look within acceptable parameters. Whether you get any kind of foam or not really depends on your ingredients, some fruits and honeys do, some don't. As long as your SG is dropping and it doesn't smell any funkier than fermentation usually smells, you're fine.
