View Full Version : How much honey do you like per gallon ?

Have a few extra one gallon jugs, was thinking of doin an experiment with diff amounts of honey to see the diff. Anyone done this?

Just go to the mead calculator and figure til your hearts content. A quart of honey per gallon is a good start for a lot of meads. A quart is roughly 3 pounds. with 71B it makes a sweet mead with EC-1118 you have bone dry and fairly alcoholic.

I don't use the calculator I just use between 3 and 4lb per gallon generally so I've a starting gravity between 1.100 and 1.110

Depends on the yeast but there may be step feeding after the initial amount in the must......

Depends what I'm doing, for a JAO variant or if I want a sweet finish, I go with 3.5 lb, usually 3 lb or therebouts for a traditional, and I'll often just dump a kilogram (2.2 lb) jar of honey in with the fruit for a melomel, which will usually go dry.
