The top was darkish red vs the bottom which had no color stuck to it? Micro amounts of oxygen only getting so far into the carboy?

The carboy? Awful! :)

The mead, pretty good. Surprisingly light fresh tart cherry smell and taste, with a hints of honey and allspice behind it...

I've had more than a few do that! I'm pretty sure it's tannins dropping out. It's quite reminiscent of what tea does to my glass mug. And I think any small amount of sediment on the bottom prevents the tannins from sticking to the glass down there.

Oh, yeah, warm water and a carboy scrubber, then warm water and a couple of teaspoons of bleach, then let it sit for two days and not it is perfectly clear again.
