I was at our local Pirate weekend (In Conwy, once a year the whole town dress up as pirates on the quay etc) any way, A freind shared a bottle of mead, it was black in colour and very sweet. (It was in a skull bottle) but my question is, how would you make a black / dark mead?

A couple of ways that I can think of:
1. Bochet - This is when you cook the honey until it darkens before fermentation.
2. Debittered Black Malt - Steep the malt in 170 F water to extract color, then make mead with the black water. Some flavor added here.
3. Coffee
4. Food coloring

I'm sure there are other ways.
