View Full Version : bottling a JAOM

Hi Folks -

It's been 65 days since I started my first JAOM. The fruit has fallen and the mead is nicely clear. I haven't taken a FG reading yet, but I can tell it's pretty much done.

Being a cider maker, I'm inclined to rack it to a smaller carboy and let it sit for a while before bottling. I always do a secondary to make sure that there are no lees in the finished product. I don't want to bottle from primary because I don't know how close to the bottom I can safely siphon.

I have a couple of questions -

What is the likely yield for a gallon of JAOM? Is it possible to squeeze 3 wine bottles from this? I can rack it to a 1/2 gallon jug and let it sit for a while but that'll bottle to 2 1/2 750 ml bottles. If I rack to another 1 gallon carboy there will be headspace above the mead. I'll be bottling within a couple weeks, so is that a big deal?

You'll get 3. But I like using half bottles anyhow.
I have 2 litre bottles here, I normally can get 2 of them from one jug, because my jugs are 5 litres, and I do a bit more than 1 gal.
Then I bottle to 375ml bottles from the 2 litres 'ageing vessels'
