View Full Version : My Mead smells/tastes like vinegar!

So, to begin with, I successfully made a 1 gallon batch of mead and wanted to scale up to 5 gallons.

I'm making the 5 gallon batch of mead using the following:
2.5 quarts of honey (Harvested from my own hive. Fine strained, not filtered)
5 gallons of water
5 tsp of yeast nutrient
Nottingham yeast (saved and re-pitched from a cider brew)
Brew bucket with a spout.

It has been nine days since I poured the 1 gallon starter into the other 4 gallons. There was some airlock action for about 6 days. Now there is no activity. I pull some off to do get a hydrometer reading (which is now at 1.020) but is smells sour and tastes like vinegar to me. (forgive me, but my OG reading was lost. The pic on my phone was erased)

Is this batch of mead salvageable? If so, how?
