I have been using an old formula to find my ABV. I got it from First steps in winemaking by C.J.J Berry. Written in the sixties i believe and in england. So here is my formula S.G - F.G divided by 7.36
I was just wondering what every one else was using to find their ABV

Most hydrometers have a potential alcohol scale on them as well. Subtracting your final reading from the original one gives you a pretty close measure.

Nothing more simple.

Like Derf, I use the hydrometer PA scale or in some cases a winemaking chart.

I divide by 0.008, much easier to do in my head. ;D But yeah, same principle.

My formula is:

((OG - FG) * 105) = ABW
((ABW) * 1.25) = ABV

For those of you interested in this sort of thing I have a WSDL Web service that you are more than welcome to use. It is standard SOAP/WSDL so you should be able to write a client in any language that supports that.

The web client for the web service is at http://radiofreeomaha.net:8080/jab/hbn/hbn-wsClient.php and for those of you who want to write a client in another language you can get the WSDL and method definitions at http://radiofreeomaha.net:8080/jab/hbn/hbn-ws.php.

Glad you like it. I was thinking of starting an entire application for mead making which is where this web service thing all started.
