Julie Herz's article about starting a meadery suggests hiring a professional mead maker for starters. Is this really necessary? Is large scale mead production really that much different from, say, 5 or 15 gallon batches? ???

A few years ago, I worked in a microbrewery for just one day. The brewmaster said that he had also started out brewing beer as a hobby. Larger scale production in the microbrewery was basically the same hobby, but with bigger toys to play with.

Comments are appreciated.

I think you have nailed the crux of the matter. There are a few things that must be done to a higher standard of course. sediment in your bottles would hurt sales for example.

For those that plan to hire someone, Making sure your on the same page equipment wise as the process they are comfortable with would be a good idea.

Also a good idea is to visit some existing meaderies that ware willing to help you and talk about the equipment and process that they use. Hiring them as a consultant for an afternoon is less expensive than making bad equipment decisions.
