Re: Chaucer's Mead

I recently tried a bottle of Lurgashall was was disappointed by the flavor. It started out great, but the finish was so heavy with a fennel/taragon and herbal bitters type of flavor that it really turned me off. Chaucer's is good, but I still think that the stuff that I make is better.

I spoke to the meadmaker at Chaucer's and they aim for a dry mead and back-sweeten to a particular brix level.

I have no idea why the awards. It is nasty stuff. My first botched batch of mead was still far better than this stuff. They even include spices to add that will sort of cover up the nastiness.

You have to try it once, just so see what the major national brand tastes like. Only once.
I must concur, though not quite as vehemently. Myself and the Mrs. were both very unimpressed. If, as has been mentioned, there is a problem with consistency, then I suggest they correct it post-haste. I will not try it again with my money, but I would not turn down an offer to sample somebody else's bottle.

Re: Chaucer's Mead

I had a friend that came to a mead tasting party I held a couple months ago. He told me that he had found a bottle of Chaucer's that he had misplaced for an entire year. He rates it as an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. Maybe aging a year makes a difference?

I still have a bottle I got a few months ago that I need to open up one of these nights...

Re: Chaucer's Mead

My wife and I sat down last night with a bottle of Chaucer's mead. Needless to say, it didn't sit well on my pallet. I may have to buy a bottle simply to keep it for more than a year and let it age.

Anyway, it appears that they used wildflower honey for their mead. It was sweet, but had an off smell to it, like it had too much wine conditioner in it. (had that happen to me once before) Very clear looking mead and sat well in the glass. It had a bit of a heavy mouth feel to it, possibly due to backsweetening?

Anyway, it's not one where the taste agreed with me, though it may for others. That's the beauty part of it, isn't it? We make our own to our personal tastes.

Re: Chaucer's Mead

Coincidentally I popped a bottle last night as well and had a glass. I found the mead too sweet for my tastes and a bit one dimensional - could not see having more than one glass in a sitting. Not bad but not real good either.
