The good folks at Penn State now house the collection of the late Dr. Jonathon White, the preeminent authority on honey composition.

AND THEY HAVE PUT TECH BULLETIN #1261 ON LINE.

I know that's screaming in computer geek speak. This bulletin is still the most comprehensive body of information on North American Honeys available anywhere, and it has not been reprinted by the USDA for decades.

Let us all thank Penn State. This is such a cool thing. When you look at the body of work that Dr. White donated, it makes a pilgrimage to PSU by any serious meadmaker seem like a mandatory activity.

OK Mr. McFeeley, when are we going? And Vicki and Pete Devaris and Dick Dunn...

Never mind screaming computer geek -- it's a BIG .pdf file, but worth the wait. I have a hard copy of the bulletin, but to see it available for public access is too much for words.

This is a complete analysis of 490, you heard it folks FOUR HUNDRED AND NINETY American honeys, conducted by John W. White jr. and company. It is MUST (pun intended) reading for all meadmakers.

Wow, a pilgrimage to PSU -- quite honestly, I'm more inclined toward a pilgrimage toward Ken's neck of the woods. Gotta dig through my files but I think it was the University of Michigan that made available an archive of really old cookbooks. This would certainly include really old mead recipes. Two pilgrimages, that would work. PSU and MSU. Oh yeah, a few more to Boulder, ect., etc.

Ah, if I was about 20 or 30 years younger, no attachments or commitments, I'd be there in no time . . .

It's hard to read in this format. I think I'll take it to a print shop, and have it printed out. It would be worth having a hardcopy with the author's notes included.

Ken, you're evil. I can get to Penn State in around 8-9 hours. Lets do a road trip!

BTW, I'm making a road trip home to visit the folks in June. Care for a stopover in Ann Arbor? I'm going right past you, and if you're game, I was going to take a quick detour over the Bridge in Port Huron to visit Munro Meadery...wanna visit a Canadian meadery?

When I get my dates set, I'm for *sure* going to head across the bridge there in Port Huron to visit Munro Honey & Meadery, so I wll plan to meet up with you. I'm going to overnight in Canada, but you're welcome to come with me on the Munro interview, they're just about 30 miles inside Canada from you.....

Vicky - who is figuring on detouring on the way *back* to see Dan McFeeley......
