I want to make a batch of No-Age Sweet Mead that J.M. has listed in the Mead Recipe index. I have all my ingredients except for Fermax. I do, however, have some J. D. Carlson Yeast Nutrient. The homebrew supply store I go to said that they are one and the same. Is that true? Can I use the Yeast Nutrient (Ammonium Phosphate) INSTEAD of Fermax and get the same results?

Fermax contains: Di-Ammonium Phosphate, Di-Potassium Phospate, Tastone and Magnesium Sulfate
L.D. Carlson's Yeast Energizer is Di-ammonium phosphate, yeast hulls, magnesium sulphate, and Vitamin B Complex. Very similar.

Carlson's Yeast Nutrient used to be used to be food-grade urea and di-ammonium phosphate. Urea is bad for mead and bad for you (http://www.brewboard.com/index.php?showtopic=28196). If it now only has di-ammonium phosphate, it would only have one of the needed additives. I don't see how the homebrew store can call Fermax and Carlson's Nutrient the same: Fermax and Carlson's Yeast Energizer, yes.
