    Default Accurate Hydrometer Reading

Hope this doesn't sound too stupid, but here goes.
When taking hydrometer readings of my beer (and fuel since I work with that also) the hydrometer does not move up after it has been put in and twirled. This may seem like a dumb question but the last couple of meads I have had when I take a reading there is so much air in the wine thief that I take a reading then watch the hydrometer move up about .008 to .010.

So do I take the first reading, is the moving caused by all of the air bubbles that I see floating or do I wait until it has re-settled. That seems to go against my training as you are supposed to twirl it so that it doesn't get "stuck", then after a twirl it sits for a couple secs, then raises...

The "Twirl" is primarily done to shake loose gas bubbles that form on the hydrometer and lift it. In an active ferment, they just keep forming no matter how much or how fast you twirl. Sometimes it helps to thoroughly de-gas your sample first before taking a reading.

So if I have this right, I need to get my reading before the air moves it up. Twas what I thought but then that means my mead is moving along much faster then I anticipated. And why a SG after the yeast was pitched raised it .010 points.
    Thank you.
