    Default Thinking on jumping in...

I am taking the intro beekeeping class in Montgomery County MD and I am really considering keeping a hive in the back yard.

Any pointers from you old timers?

How close can the hive bee to fences, can the hive bodies be stained instead of painted?

    Thoughts?

    Thanks!

    Hey Yabodie,

Thats great you are getting into beekeeping we need more beekeepers. Not sure what you mean by how close to a fence? Definitely paint your hive bodies with a light colored latex paint. All the beekeepers I know use paint and not stain. My bee hives are painted white but you can use any light color.

    Cheers,
    Jon

You can place the hives very close to a fence. If you have neighbors on the other side, being close to the fence is good, as the bees have to climb and will be above their heads as they depart.
