Thread: Shelf life on a bucket of mixed Star San

  1. Default Shelf life on a bucket of mixed Star San

    Hello!

I mixed up a bucket of Star San a week ago. How long is it usable after it has been mixed?

    Thanks

From the Northern Brewer website: "Reusable: a solution of Star San will remain effective for up to three to four weeks in a sealed container; it is effective as long as the pH is 3 or lower."

I know people who make up 5 gallon batches of it and use it for months, with no issues, especially if you use distilled water when mixing a batch.

I had a 5 gallon batch for 14 months and it's pH was still 2.49. As long as you clean everything before you stick it in the Star San and seal it in something like a plastic Carboy with a screw on top it should keep for a very long time.

There was a beer podcast with the guy who invented it. I want to say the podcast was in 2007 or so. The inventor really couldn't say anything other then what the governing body said they had to put on the bottle. He did elude that as long as it's free of debree and the pH is 2.5 or lower it will work.
