Greetings All,

Good practice is to take a hydrometer reading before pitching the yeast, right?

But how does one get an accurate gravity reading with active fermentation taking place in your measuring jar?

I'm trying to see how far into fermentation I am but there are active fermentation bubbles in the tube.

Can one obtain an accurate reading under these circumstances?

Yes you can. Move some must to a jar/glass/something tall where you can put your hydrometer. Something of course clean (a funnel with a filter is great for this). Then wait until there is no foam and put the hydrometer in. If foam forms wait until it dissapears, and then spin the hydrometer. CO2 bubbles will push your hydrometer up, spinning the hydrometer breaks the bubbles and stabilizes the hydrometer. When it slows down enough or stops, take your reading. Then put the hydrometer safe, clean it and return the must to the original fermentation vessel.

It does not change that fast- unless you plan on leaving it in the tube for hours before taking the reading
