I'm sure many of you have already seen this, but it's too helpful not to pass it on.

I just used $20 to make a point. I added it all up, and I can get everything I need except the honey and a big pot from one nearby source for just $70. I have a limited amount of funds to spend on my first mead and I'd rather spend it on supplies and ingredients so I can get going sooner. It's not that I question the value of the book, I'm sure it's chock full of very useful information. There is no better teacher than experience. I'm anxious to get my hands dirty.Norskersword said:I only paid $12 for my copy.

That includes hydrometer, Ph strips, yeast, malt extract, yeast nutrients, adjunct grain, scale, siphon tubing, and all the essential stuff. Even if I don't actually "need" some of it for my first batch I figured why not get it now so that I have it for my second or third batch. Like I said earlier, I'm an info-holic. I want to know every detail about my concoction so I can tell what is going on and how to adjust it to make it better. Don't think that's ALL the bells and whistles, but it's a few of them ;DNorskersword said:$70? You could get all the necessities to start 1 gallon batches for $25-$30 at my local brewshop. You must be getting all the bells and whistles.
Yup, and they don't make extracts in cans sized for 1-gallon batches. I hope it will keep if I refrigerate the leftover.Norskersword said:Oh yeah, I had forgoten you are making braggot. ;D
My understanding is that it will take a while to clear. It will probably require some aging as well. Then there's the bottle-conditioning phase, that's another 2-3 weeks. I'm betting on 6-8 months before it's drinkable. Of course, drinkable doesn't mean perfect.Norskersword said:Actually I thought it would cost more to make a braggot. Let me know how it works out! How long does it take to before a braggot is ready to drink anyway?
