I have read several posts and the concensus is that the scum layer on top is normal like krausen in beer. Here are a few photos of my second batch of mead and I am a little scared as my first batch is possibly contaminated. I took extra procautions to assure that it doesn't happen to this one.

12 lbs of MI wildflower honey
Lavin K1V-1116
Yeast Energizer
Yeast Nutrients
3 gallons tap Filtered

Heated 1 gallon to 145 mixed honey for ever lol used sterilzed water and cleaning solution to wash and rinse mixed directly in the pot used to pre boil the 1 gallon. added the extra water to cool and get to volume. added yeast at 78 degrees. Fermentation started in 12 hours.

Thanks for looking
