All you mead is love...

« on: 08/06/05 »

Hello
I am new to the board and mead.
Actually I havent made any mead yet but my imagination is all fired up and I cant help but mull over the possibilities.

Has anyone tried using standard confectioners flavorings in mead?
I have been looking for a source for fresh violet for some time but have not been successful.  I thought violet candy flavoring might be an option.

I am way ahead of myself of course.  My first mead will be rather simple.  But who can blame me for dreaming?

Nice to meet you all

Quirky,

Welcome to the boards!  You'll find a great community of peope here -- newbies and old hands alike -- who make meads of all kinds.

I've never used candy flavors, though I've heard of people making meads with soft drink soda extracts (Coke, Dr. Pepper, etc.).  Candy should work okay -- provided you really like the flavor of the particular confection you're using.  Also keep in mind that nearly all flavor ingredients will change their profile once they've been fermented.  You may want to wait until all fermentation is completed before adding any flavorings, but that's really just a matter of taste.

Some of the folks on this board are very much into herbs and spices, and someone may well have a good source of violets or other flower ingredients for you.

Again, welcome!
