Almost embarrassingly, this is only the second commercial mead that I have tried; the first was a mead from a Wyoming winery when I used to live in Laramie. The Wyoming mead was horrible (thin, little flavor...)
Well, I went to a gem of a liquor store here in Tucson. This place was a small local place with an extraordinary wine, beer, and liquor selection. I asked if they had mead, and they pointed me to a shelf. They carry Redstone, and one other label that I forget the name.
I got a Redstone traditional, and their vanilla and cinnamon.
What a beautiful drink! Again, this shows my inexperience, but I have only brewed one batch of JAO, tasted one, nasty, commercial mead and have 5 gallons of a traditional that will need to age for a while. This Redstone really opened my eyes to the beauty of what mead can be.
I got into mead because I like brewing, honey, and fermented beverages, so I figured "what the hell. I'll brew mead."
I am not good with tasting notes but here goes nothing...
Traditional-
Nose:
Apricoty, powerful honey aroma, orange and floral notes I can't identify
Taste:
Orangey, Sweet, thick body, a bit spicey and kind of a tree barky finish
Those are the adjectives that come to my mind.
I thought I would share.
