View Full Version : Tannins - grape, wine

I'm about to embark on trying the "3 Week" mead here, which calls for (among other things) grape tannin.

The brew supply house in my locale sold me wine tannin, though the ingredients list says nothing of grapes or grape derivatives. (I forget right now what the main ingredient actually was, I don't have the package with me at the moment).

I was just curious, is there a difference? Or is tannin pretty much tannin?

Tannins are very diverse compounds and the ones from grape seeds or skins may be different from the ones in oak galls, or tea leaves. However, for a sweet mead recipe, any tannins should work and those wine tannins will be fine.

Good luck with the batch and

I hope what I have will do for this recipe (I don't think the mead will be too dry). I checked, the magic ingredient is chestnut extract.
