Hi kudapucat,

'Generic nutrient' would be any no brand name nutrient. Also no telling what's in it. That's why most people like Fermaid K, you know what and how much you are putting in the mix.

You could formulate your own. Use some Epsom salts/magnesium sulfate and boiled yeast with your starter. Then add the DAP with some more boiled yeast after lag. Something else you could add is some food grade B vitamins.

Just make sure your total YAN is up to snuff.

Hope this was helpful.

Does anybody have a home made fermaid K or Goferm recipe?
I know roughly how much DAP to add, I have epsom salts, and B vitamins and old yeast, but not how much to add per litre/gal

Also the B vitamins I have are the 'rat turd' brown pill, how does one dissolve this properly? just add it to the boiling yeast?

Any direction would be greatly appreciated here.

The only advice I would be able to give it to put zero DAP into your home made goferm/rehydration nutrient, it'll hurt the yeast while the rehydrate. Any YAN ratings you see for goferm are coming from (I believe) amino nitrogen which is probably from the dead yeast component (a guess) not from DAP.

From Lallemand website:

FERMAID K®
The original and reliable FERMAID® K is a blended complex yeast nutrient that supplies inorganic nitrogen (DAP), organic nitrogen (alpha amino nitrogen derived from yeast extract), key nutrients (magnesium sulfate, thiamine, folic acid, niacin, biotin and calcium pantothenate) and inactivated yeast.

GO-FERM® is specific inactive yeast produced through a unique yeast biomass process fine-tuned to obtain high levels of certain essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids required for healthy yeast fermentations.

From Scott Laboratories:

Fermaid® K is a blended complex yeast nutrient that supplies ammonia salts (DAP), free amino acids (organic nitrogen derived from inactivated yeast), sterols, unsaturated fatty acids, key nutrients (magnesium sulfate, thiamin, folic acid, niacin, biotin, calcium pan*tothenate) and inactive yeast.

No hard numbers. The idea, at least to me, would seem be to just get what you can to the yeast. Raisins and such are also good.

Remember: "First, do no harm"

P.S. This may be of use.

Boiled "nutritional yeast" (Red Star makes this stuff, can be found in most whole foods style stores, and isn't expensive) might be a good idea as the yeast portion of the recipe, since it is pretty highly fortified with nutrients, lots of minerals, vitamins, protein, you name it and it's probably in there. Very good stuff (tasty on pizza or in gravy as well!).

Yeah, but how much boiled bread yeast, how many 'rat turd' smelly pills (Vit. B) how much bee pollen, I know vertually 0 about YAN in terms of numbers. I get the concept. But even if I research the YAN ppm I need, how much boiled bread yeast or raisins is that?
I do understand DAP should be delayed until after the lag - I've seen the effects of this myself.

Can you get bee pollen there? There good to use and I'm sure you can find lots of info for it.

Not sure, I'll make some enquiries... My dad's an ameteur apiarist, but I have no doubt he wont know how to collect it. Does anybody know how bee pollen is collected?

It's collected by some kind of grate that the bees have to walk over getting back into the hive, the pollen drops off them through the grate and into the collector. The exact mechanics I have no clue, I'm sure the whole apparatus is sold for apiarists though, or designs could be found.
