IMO, it's always better to use a bucket as your primary fermenter. That way you should never have those kinds of accidents or need to use what brewers call a blow-off tube. A bucket loosely covered with a clean towel or with a loosely fitted lid (not snapped on). No need for an airlock during the first few days and when there is a need for an airlock you should be racking into your carboy at that point...

I haven't seen one gallon fermentation buckets yet! At least not at either of my local brew shops. I do have a 1 gallon honey bucket that I'm converting to a fermenting bucket by drilling a hole in the middle large enough for a bung!
