As my first competition, it's going really well. I had to leave as my wife and mother had an appointment at 7pm... It started at 11 as expected and was still going with some of the first rounds still going in the 25c melomels category as there were so many entries. There were few traditional and they went through to the third judging.
I'm proud to say my orangeblossom mead made it to the third round and is going on to the last. WOOT!

The official results will be given out at the next CFHB meeting this February 6th. WOOT! I can't wait to hear! *grins*

I guess that CFHB just wants to give everyone the chance to be there when you get an award and announce publicly in front of an audience that you've received something. Just to make it more formal, I guess. Spectators and such weren't really invited to join in, but could if they so desired and showed up. The one in Colorado is a bit higher scale with regard to it's being more publicized and having spectators come in and having a convention like atmosphere. Meadlenium is a bit more toned down, although exciting to hear what the judges look for in a mead and what they have to say about them. The good news about stewarding is that you don't have to drink/taste any of them if you don't want to. But you have to as a judge! *grins*

According to what I heard about last years Meadlenium, there weren't too many entries (something like 60) and it would have been possible to do that. However, as this competition grows, which it apparently did this time, it took many hours to do some judging in several categories. The traditionals were done and ready for final judgement as the melomels were still in the first round when I left in the evening. They still had to go to the second round with the melomels and pyments and had reached the second round with the cysers.

Boy, let me tell you! I walked in and my jaw dropped when I saw how many entried had been sent! It was a sight to see all those boxes with seperated entries into their categories. The new category 25C Melomels had something like 7 boxes that held something like 40 bottles each. That really seemed to be the largest category. It was a humbling experience to see how many entries there were. Some people with 5 and 6 entries...

I met many of the judges and many came up from Miami specifically for this event. We went through several pairs of judges who eventually gave up because they were getting so tipsy they didn't want to misjudge a mead.

It's the new BJCP class 25 sub category C. All in this category are melomels.

1 = Gold
2 = Silver
3 = Bronze.
Best of show winners each get a cup with Meadlenium 2005 engraved on it.
