View Full Version : I got Lucky last night

It was about 1:30 this morning when I finished cleaning and labling the bottles of mead I corked yesterday. While putting them away I noticed the top of one of the case which had been laid down about a month ago looked odd.

I uprighted this case and opened the top to have a cork pop out of one of the bottles, just missing my eye. Grabbing that bottle with my thumb over the top I dashed for the sink. Grabbed a corkscrew and that case of mead went out back and started pulling corks, in all 3 out of 8 bottles had enough pressure they where pushing the corks out.

I drank 2 bottles of sparkling mead while pushing corks back into the bottles. This morning the corks have come out of all the bottles.

Guess I'm going to let it go flat then make vinegar with it.

Eeesh! Sounds like we almost had to start calling you Ol' One-Eye (cowboy parlance), or Tony One-Eye (mob-speak). :D

Bummer dude.

Sounds like a combination of some live yeasts left before bottling and our sine wave So Cal weather teaming up to muck up your batch. That sucks out loud!

Overall, I got off cheap.

A cork in the face is a low price for that lesson, it could have been a bursting bottle.

So what did it taste like, you did dispose of it properly didn't you? ;)

Knock-out by cork :-X
I'm sure it happened to all of us at one time or another...we may not admit it, but....
We may not have been hit by flying corks, but corks comming out by themselves...maybe a dybuke got trapped inside :-[

P.S. At first, reading the title of your posting, I had the wrong idea, then I remembered Oskaar had the redheads with him :'(

beeboy, I had been up since 4am the morning before, and it was nearing 2am I couldn't properly dispose of more then 2 bottles, the other 6 will become vinegar. It taste great, got me to thinking about making a sparkling mead agian.

Ted, I have read and been told of that happening. Wrong idea... was the idea behind the title.

Strange title for a thread on a place that is supposed to talk about mead...

Are you bragging or what?

Just out of curiosity, was this a batch that you cold-stabilized?

PS - Glad to hear you got lucky and didn't end up with a black eye like Angus! ;D

I had a 3 gallon carboy bulk aging with a cork (out of air locks at the time) It popped and I never did find the cork. I airlocked it and prayed that it wasn't ruined.

Since then, I keep a large stash of air locks on hand and some drilled stoppers for wine bottles. If they pop now, I'll airlock and leave them to finish (again).

Sorry to hear of your loss. At 2am it's tough to find champagne bottles, corks and wires for rebottling! :'(

Good luck with it as vinegar though and let us know how that turns out.

Hey byathread,

Nope, this batch finished at 1.008 & 25% abv. The gravity hadn't dropped in a couple of months when I bottled it. I was really surprised it started up agian.
