That crazy uncle of mine picked up about 3 bushels of freshly picked grapefruit for me when he brought back my 8 gallons of Orange Blossom honey from florida yesterday.

Has anyone used Grapefruit Juice as a mead/wine Base?

Even though I probably have enough for 2 1/2 gallons of juice in a 3 gallon batch of mead, I'm thinking this might be to strong a flavor. With the high acid content of the grapefruit juice, I'm suspecting the last thing it needs is orangblossom honey (wich has higher acid than other Honeys IIRC)

Maybe this calls fror a strong honey flavor like buckwheat to stand up to the grapefruit?

Or maybe I just pass on this idea altogether, what are the thoughts of the mead making community... hmmm think i'll check jack kellers website, he seems to have made almost every type of wine, i'll post there as well.

ok I found 30 Mead lovers digests with grapefruit mead information here, not to mention 4 grapefruit wines on jack kellers site. comments and suggestions are still welcome. I'll probably post a couple different recipes for consideration and comment. Oh and i was correct, recipes so far range from 1/3 grapefruit juice, to 1 grape fruit in a 5 gallon batch. Jack Keller uses 6 grapefruit to a gallon for a wine.
