hiya,
I am following a mead recipie And it says to put in half the nutrients in after it has fermented for a 24 hours..
When i put in the nuitrients it bubbled over and out of the carboy (was messy) then it settled down..
I have never added yeast nuietreints on the fly like that before.. is this common? and What can i do to prevent that.. either put it all in on day one, or slower?

PS: My initial SG: was 1.05 5 gallon batch roughly 15 lbs honey, with a potential abv% of 14.5
ANy idea how long to let mead go before taking it off the primary..

Thanks

Hey Dude,

We need your exact recipe in order to accurately comment on your question about the length of the primary. This means yeast, honey, nutrient, etc.

Did you add the nutrient in dry form or did you dissolve it into some water before adding it into the must? I recommend dissolving it into some bottled water and then adding it into the fermentation vessel. Let it stand about a minute or so and then start slowly swirling the must with a lees stirrer or a long handled plastic spoon. Make sure to watch it while you swirl or you may get a volcano, when you see foam forming, slow down and just watch it to be sure that you're not going to lose any out of the carboy.

Enlikil,

Pretty much any powder added to any carbonated liquid will cause a ton of foam to be released.

As Oskaar mentions, if you dissolve the powder first, you won't get all that foam. You should do that for any powder addition.

Cheers,
Jay

Er, I am a Mead NewBee, but have been calculating pretty obsessively. Either you have a typo in your SG or your calc is off. A starting gravity of 1.05 is about 6-7% Potential Alcohol.

Did you mean 1.105? That would be pretty much 14%

With that much Honey in 5 gal, you should indeed be around 14-15% (14.8 in my calcs) potential alcohol, but the gravity should be around 1.11.
