One of my cafés had this mead in their drink rotation, so I tried it in spite of the ingredient list having hops in it like beer.

I didn't enjoy it at all. It was a syrupy texture, and yet also dry as the desert. I like my meads on the sweet side, but it was pucker-inducing when I took a first sip at the counter, and the cashier chuckled at me. There was a LOT of hop taste in it as well, which didn't help the dryness. Then, despite a hint of medicinal herb smell, I couldn't detect any herb taste at all.

Then I noticed it fizzing weakly and realized it was either supposed to be carbonated and failing, or it hadn't been stabilized correctly. Either way, I didn't notice any intentional carbonation when I was drinking it.

Apparently I'm not the only one with a lukewarm impression of it; a lot of the reviewers hate it for being confused--half-mead and half-beer, with few of either drink's good qualities. It's strange that Chatoe Rogue had such a WEIRD mead when it's apparently a great beer brand.
 
There's plenty of places on the net where you can find beer makers who move to meads but when you read their ingredient lists and method, they do indeed seem to be heading toward a confused and uncertain end product.

To my mind, its fair enough to make a honey beer or even something with malt like a braggot, so either something intended to have a hint of honey either flavour or aroma, or something mead like with some malt type addition for flavour, but using a full range of ingredients for one product and presumably some honey or whatever combination to create a confused flavour/texture result is hard to reason.

It's made worse by no real standards, but also having a few, apparently very skilled makers who seem to be using this kind of technique to great success (can't say for certain, only from what I've read - I can't get their products here too try), like Brad at bnektar etc.

Maybe its just that they (these beer type people) should stick to beers if they're good at those.........
 
The mis-spelling of Chatoe should have tipped you off right away....Cutesy is one thing; ignorance is another.

Yeah, I figured the spelling was way too gimmicky, at least for mead.
 
Sh$%#%t! I as well. Bought this over a month ago. Wish I would of seen this post before the last trip to the liquor store.

Ok, so I wasn't the only one who cringed at that spelling... made me wonder if they'd borked "rouge" too, but apparently no, they did mean "rogue." I think.

Hopefully the onslaught of bad reviews for this mead are going to spark an overhaul, but for right now I'm not touching it anywhere I see it.
 
And THE CLASH will probably be suing them for stealing their album cover, Wait, not the clash... Where have I seen that fist? It's cover art and it's 80's but I'm drawing a blank. It will come to me.
