Anyone ever had any? I picked some up that was made in Bamberg, Germany, the region where this stuff is popular. Holy cow, it was like drinking a bottle of Liquid Smoke. Ugh, one I don't care to try again.

You should try a bottle of Alaskan Smoked Porter. It will change your impression about smoked beer. If there is a Hooters where you live, give them, er, it a try!

Cheers,
brewbear

Smoked beer (or "bacon beer" ;)) is an aqcuired taste. I've only sampled a handful, some I've enjoyed, but I need still more exposure.

I do like the added complexity of small quantities of smoked malts in dark beers. I used a few ounces of peat-smoked malt in my winter stout this year.

Well, I read about smoked beer in Homebrewing for Dummies a few days ago, and I have to say that what I had was far different than what was described. The book made it sound like the smoked grain is a nice, subtle compliment to the beer. What I tried was definitely not a compliment.

What I had was a brown bottle with a label that had green writing that said it originaed in Bamberg. I'll try to check the name next time I see it.

Hey m_y,

The qualities of a style of beer (just like mead & wine) are very subjective. The finished product will be the brewer's concept of what this style should be.

I've started trying the Imperial Porters I can find. Some have been very close to the BJCP style guidlines, and a few have been more Stout then Guinness.

Happy Mazing,

Anthony

That's a good point, so I will try and remain open minded if I try another smoked beer.

Has anyone ever by chance seen some of the wierd/cool names for beers? At the store I went to, they had stuff like "In Heat," and "Santa's Butt." I got an English Double Ale named "Seriosly Bad Elf" for my dad. Even if he doen't like the beer, the bottle will be funny on the mantle.
