I was reading something I found on the web having to do with Australian wine. They mentioned that the demand in Europe in traditionally wine drinking countries (I assume they meant places like Spain, France, Italy, et.al.) had dropped significantly (they gave some percentage). They mentioned that there was an excess in wine production world-wide. The numbers are staggering for the amount of grapes and liters of wine produced.

So one thought is that mead makers like Long Island Meadery are going to have to create a niche in an already saturated marketplace. It'd be nice if those in the SCA could be the niche but a lot of the people involved in the SCA are hippie types with minimal budgets or do their own brewing...

So with a maximum production of fifty cases a year - a bottle of my mead should go for lots of $$ right. Now I just need to find that magic #, quit my job and live like a king.

Chuckle... I just know from our local SCA group that we have a mixture like I describe... The good thing is that they all drink and all love mead... The bad thing is that many can't afford to buy the mead they like to drink... But making it cuts the cost, right?

Maybe a good thread would be to figure the minimum cost to make a gallon of good mead including the cost of all the equipment...
 
Well in a lot of the cases I know of around here they would buy it if they could but there is no local distribution. When I did a search for a store that carries Mead in this area it was a shop in Florida that was the closest.
I have yet to taste a commercial made mead. If I wanted to order from one of the meaderys I see listed I have to go to the ABC store and fill out paper work. Then send a copy of that paper work with my order and my money to the meadery. They then ship my order back to that ABC store where I have to go and pay the state alcohol tax for shipping from out of state. Also the ABC store is not required to alert me when my order has arrived. I believe, I could be wrong, that if it stays there long enough they are allowed to sell it. After I have already payed for it and they don't have to pay me back.
Damn with all that I'd just as soon make it myself. The quality per batch might be less than what a commercial meadery can do but in the long run it's a lot less hassle.
Besides home brewing leads to happy accidents. I have a friend stumbled across a recipe for home-brewed Jagermeister just because he substituted one ingredient he didn't have.
