Wow, there hasn't been anything posted in this thread for a while.

The only mead I have tried, Other than my own, is from Bee's Brothers Meadery, in Albuquerque. My Father brought me a bottle after I told him I was brewing. They have several varieties for sale, but the one I had was Veroica's Cherry. THere was a sticker on the bottle that said 'New Mead', but I wasn't sure if this was a New Flavor, or a Young Mead... Well I think it mead that it was supposed to age a bit. There was a biting Alchohol burn in the throat that I think needed to mellow out. But the honey was still prominent, and the cherry flavor was strong.

Bees brothers called this a semisweet, and the ABV was 12% Since this was the only mead I've tasted other than My own, I would have to say it was pretty good, and probably much better if it was aged for a year. It was definately much sweeter than I like.

But now I've got some Melomels of my own on the way, so I will have to update this once I get some more experience.

I was in Albuquerque recently, and picked up a few more meads from Bees Brothers. I got Rick's Raspberry and Spice. The Spice had a sticker on it 9/9/2004, so we opened it on 9/9/2007, my neice's birthday. It had a very good level of spice, and it was just sweet enough for me. Less sweet than the Cherry mead, but still not dry. There was a bit of a bitter, or tannic flavor that I didn't like at first, but after the first glass it was fine. I would only suggest that they use dark bottles, rather than clear. If the mead is going to be around for several years, it would probably help to protect it.

I tucked the Raspberry away in the cellar for now. It was dated Early '05 I think.

Wow, three years later, I just opened a bottle of Bees brothers "Queens" dated 8/6/07 13% abv. The only other meads I have had before this is a bottle of Chaucers, and my own JAO, so I dont have much to judge it against, nor do I have the knoldge to do it justice. Will give it a shot. The color is amazing light golden and clear with no sediment in the bottle. Plesant honey on the nose then when sipping a stronger sent I cant quite identify comes into play and is not pleasant. Good mouth feel with a hint of spice flavor, no real honey taste just the sent. Finishes hot and rough, like a shot of something much stronger. (drinking some while I type this, and it does get a little better with every sip lol) Not being an expert on wines (yet) the most likely thing I can think of for the off flavors is the clear bottle, The store I got it at keeps their meads up front in a rack that gets plenty of light and is somewhat warm. I think the store may have ruined this one for me. Spoke to the wine manager at the store and he told me that the meadery is having some trouble dealing with the city, and may not have much longer left (boo!!). He said that they have already stoped production on one of their meads and the three bottles he had would be the last he could get, so I picked one up. Is thier Kings Mead "Sack" 17% abv dated 2/15/06. Has a much darker color than the queens, but is also in a clear bottle. Plan on keeping it in a paper bag in the spare room with my meads. Never know may be worth something someday lol. If anyone has tryed this mead and had better results I look forward to hearing about it, as I said I know pretty much nothing about wines so please dont let my thoughts keep you from trying this mead if you get a chance. And if anyone is ever in the Albuquerque area and feels like giving a noob some tips just let me know.
