A friend, who happens to know that I like Mead, was in Ohio last week and picked me up a bottle of Brothers Drake "Wild Ohio" traditional mead from Columbus, Ohio. Has anyone tried it?

Well, if it turns out to be awful just remember I was willing to take the bullet for you.
I've had several of their meads (even judged a few!) but not the Wild Ohio. Please report your impressions once you've found an excuse to open the bottle.

according to their website they only sell in the Columbus, OH area so this is my first chance to give it a try.
I just had family move to Columbus, OH so will have to keep an eye out for this! hope u find that excuse soon 
I live in Columbus and have bought brothers drake since 2009. With few exceptions, I've enjoyed every mead of theirs that I've tasted. The wild Ohio it's not one of my favorites, but is still quite tasty. I highly recommend the Apple Pie, Bergamot Blue, and Scarlet Solstice.
In addition from buying directly from them, I've also found their mead at whole foods on sawmill, and weilands on indianola.

I prefer mine on the semi-sweet side as well, but a good dry mead can be nice.
From their website I gathered that you either have to get it from their location or a few select locations around Columbus. I also read that it's all Columbus area Honey which is a good think since I like the whole buy locally as much as possible. Doubt I'll get to try many of their styles if they are only sold in the Columbus area, but the friend who picked it up for me is an OSU grad so she does get down there every now and again so I'll have to ask her to pick me up some of the other styles.

Yea, they are only available at a few places. A couple restaurants in the brewery district keep their hopped mead on tap (which is delicious after it ages for about a year)..
Brothers Drake pride themselves on using as many local ingredients as possible. Their honey is all ohioan, but not all of it is from the Columbus area.
They are also really friendly, and are eager to talk about their methods and ingredients.

Sounds like a Columbus area version of B Nektar up here in Detroit who are always helpful to us homebrewers. They'll sample our stuff and give feedback, talk to us about their recipes when we want to make a similar recipe and are all around great guys. You just have to love commercial meaderies like that

I just bought a couple bottles of Brothers Drake. I tried the Wild Ohio and I will say I am disappointed. It was watery and not much flavor. It was dry which is fine but it just tasted weak. There was no mouthfeel at all. I will post once I try the Apple Pie.

Well I was about to comment anyway, so no worries. I’m also in Columbus so I thought i’d chime in about this local mead.
I tried it a few years ago and I was disappointed as well. But then again, that was well before I learned about mead! I think I was strictly a beer drinker back then.
Now that I have some batches of my own fermenting, I may buy another bottle of Brothers Drake and make some comparisons.

I revisited the meadery this weekend and it’s much better than I remember. Maybe my tastes have changed in the past few years. We ordered two flights and they were all good. The best was their Apple Pie mead aged in a bourbon barrel. I tried the blueberry tea one and that gave me some ideas. I had been curious about tea in mead. They had a coffee mead that was very interesting. The taste was rather watery but the aromas were amazing! I wonder if it just needs to age?
They also told me they had a tasting event a while ago where they took one of their most popular flavors, the Apple Pie, and served flights of the same mead from past years. So you could taste 2009 mead, 2011 mead, 2013 mead, etc. I thought that sounded pretty fun.
Finally, I went to my local brew store yesterday, and they’ve partnered with Brothers Drake to do a mead competition! I doubt I’ll have anything worth entering in 3 months, but I may go for the “announcement party”. The winner gets to have their mead made in the Brothers Drake 50 gallon fermenter!
