Can you make a 1 gallon batch in a 5 gallon bucket?

Hi, all,

I'm getting ready to make my first ever batch of mead, but a question has come up that I haven't been able to find the answer to yet (I've read the NewBee Guide here and The Compleat Meadmaker). Here is my question:

I bought a 5-gallon mead making kit (5-gallon bucket and carboy and all the accoutrements), but have now decided to only make a 1 gallon batch of mead. Can I make a 1 gallon batch in a 5-gallon fermenting bucket, or would that create problems?

Yes, you can ferment a 1 gallon batch in a 5 gallon bucket, but you would want to get a 1 gallon carboy or other vessel to rack into to limit the headspace.

Yes, the size of the primary fermenter is not an issue. Exposure to air during active fermentation is not harmful to meads. But as mentioned above, you will want a gallon jug to age it in later.
