Cat repellent

This one isn't intended for human consumption, but it's still technically a likker. ;)

There are some feral cats living nearby. They've taken to looking in (longingly, I swear!) at our indoor cats. Our cats are not so fond of random homeless cats and get pretty agitated. Recently the feral cats sprayed a little bit right on our porch. How rude! So, I've concocted a foul mixture that should hopefully keep them away:

2 cloves of garlic
zest of 1 orange
~1 pint of cheap nasty vodka (airlock quality)

The garlic was mashed up a bit with a muddler. Ingredients combined and let sit for ~10 days, then strained and sprayed in strategic locations. Smells horrible. Apparently cats are not fond of citrus and garlic, being in the lily family, is poisonous to cats and pungent to boot.

If you don't have a feral cat problem, this should work equally well as a human repellent. It's noxious, somehow the garlic and citrus have combined into something awful. I'll let you all know if it seems to be working.

Tried it. took some getting used to, but I hate to waste liquor. Tastes awful and now my cats won't play with me. (just kidding)
 
there are a couple things you can do.

If you have a friend with a big dog, you can have them bring it over and let it pee around the place. The smell will tell the cats that there is something big in the area that will eat them. You can also go to your local hunters supply place in get some Fox Uren scent.

What I do is to use a small varmet trap to catch the cats, one at a time. then I drive them a few miles away and let them go. You could take them to the pound if you want to pay the pound to take them. Or you could just dump them somewhere far far away where they won't bother you anymore. How you get rid of the cats is entirely up to you. just dont' let people see you letting them go in their area. they might not like cats anymore than yu do and have enough of their own to bother with. I let the ones I catch go at night.

The trap I have is about 3 feet long. I just put a small cup with some dry catfood in it, set the trap and check it again in before I go to bed or in the morning. Harbor freight sells several sizes of traps.

You might be able to get some of your money back by talking one of more of your neighbors into "Removing Their Cat Problem." if you know of any who don't like cats.


After you catch all the cats around your place, you won't see anymore until the neighbors get new ones and they start to wonder.

Cats are Evil and they Stink. The only reason they didn't die off years ago is because God made them cute and fuzzy so weman will like them.
 
Well I certainly don't want the place to smell like pee! That's why I'm trying to repel the damn cats. ;D

Trapping and relocating/killing won't help. There are tons of feral cats around here and more would just move in. We are looking into trap/neuter though, which will get rid of the kittens (cute and furry though often winding up dead) and should cut down on territorial behavior like spraying.

I don't really care that the cats are there and spend a good amount of time under the stairs to the lower deck. If they ate the horrid pigeons I'd be even more ambivalent. It's the deck next to the kitchen that I am warding them away from.

Looks like there may be an application for my Cat Zapper, think UV bug zapper on steriods! :evil4:
 
Oh, one more thing that I forgot to mention. you can sprinkle finely ground Chili powder all over the place where you don't want the cats to go. The Powder will stick to the cats feet and the cats lick their feet to clean themselves. They won't like the taste and will figure out to stay away from anything that smells of chili.
 
I use the dried habaneros and Cajun Magic spice powder. It's a hell of a 1-2 punch! You have to be really careful when you're applying both of them because if they get onto any kind of draft and you inhale them, you're done.
 
No unfortunately. The only thing I've found that works on ex-girlfriends is holding their credit card over an open flame!

Feral cats = AR-15 at my house. At least they would ifin I could get one dumb enough to try the Rottweiler or the Pitt Bull.

So far, no sign or smell of cats on the porch since I sprayed the foul liquid. Must be working!

The day it stops working though, I'm inviting you guys over. My wife can't yell at me if someone else zaps, shoots, or feeds the cats to their rabid dogs. ;)

Thought I would update this with a summary of the potency of my homemade cat repellent. The first application lasted about 3 weeks. I applied again with the remainder of the mixture (which had been left to steep on the zest and garlic), and have yet to see those cats again. The local squirrels are having a field day on the porch, which is fine by me since they don't seem to be spraying anything smelly. Best of all the birds are getting pretty bold too, which means those cats are long gone. (also watching the jays chase squirrels is pretty funny.)
