...Just came back from the shouk, and the most affordable bourbon there was Jim Beam. Now to wait till cherries are firmly in season; at this time they are still quite expensive.

Dan, should I use sweet cherries, or sour?

As for being cultivating that time-warp sensation, it takes a little imagination sometimes. You can sit on a bench in a Roman ampitheater, and if the sun is beating down on all that marble around, you just sweat and wonder when you'll be able to buy a Coke. Hard to imagine that once gladiators fought wild animals there in the arena two thousand years ago, or that maybe one's own forefathers may have been brought there in chains. The photograph of a Jewish woman's worn sandal, left behind in the haste of a defeated rebellion against those same Romans - that is instantly evocative.

Since I've never had a yen to try absinthe, I don't notice the brands. However, for you, dear man, I will go on down to shouk again tomorrow and make a note of the brands available in two good stores there. And probably buy early peaches and apricots for ice cream and chutney and melomels in the covered market. :) So I'll let you know tomorrow afternoon my time (I'm 10 hours ahead of California time, so that would be sometime late morning for you).

Wild Turkey is a close second.

Well Best Bourbon is a matter of taste.

As for mine, Knob Creek is second to none.

Might as well weigh in here too.

Two words, Booker Noe.

Grandson of Jim Beam, and the only uncut, unfiltered, bottled directly from the barrel Bourbon that I know of. It is not for timid or the cardiac challenged Bourbon neophyte. It is INtense all the way, but fantastically rich and complex. I just love the stuff.

That being said, I always have a bottle of Jack, Jimmy, Maker's and Knob Creek on the Bourbon Shelf of my bar.

I find myself partial to 1792 Ridgemont Reserve or Woodford Reserve, however I wouldn't use them for mixing myself. Call me cheap, but what I consider top shelf sees only ice cubes. Jim Beam black label goes into the mixing (mint julep is "stewing" as I type and I intend to use it for some cherry bounce in the near future.)

Looks like its Jim Beam for the Israeli version of Cherry Bounce - these imported drinks are most expensive, and JB is the least expensive among them. Any left over, I'll just have to buckle down and pour over ice and hold my nose and drink...poor me. ;D

Jack Daniels isn't bourbon, it's a Tennessee whiskey.

If you're feeling flush my favorite bourbons are
Bookers, and Wild Turkey Rare Breed.

Ok, if we are weighing in on our favorite whiskies here...

I'm very partial to Loch Dhu. Unfortunately it is way out of my price range now. It has developed a bit of a cult following and being rare anyway has become insanely expensive.

I'm not a bourbon snob and I think Jack Daniels is
underrated as a whiskey.

Schwew, thought I was calling Jack Daniels a bourbon somewhere and was feeling like a total bonehead. That's a tough one to screw up because the it says Tennessee Whiskey right on the label. LOL

If you can find it, a very nice whisky for a winter's eve is Connemara. It's an irish peated single malt (and the only one of his kind).

For the rest I prefer a nice Glenkinchie or a Talisker for tasting. For more general purpose drinking I have a bottle of Glenfiddich, and several blends. Also a Jameson as that's my girlfriends favorite.

I'm trying to get her to quit drinking whisk(e)y mixed... People spend years trying to perfect it, another set of years to age it, and she wants to pour some sticky carbonated beverage in it - UGH!

I was thinking about getting me the single barrel jack or another scotch in the following month... We'll see ;)
