"“The enemy is not each other, it’s liquor and wine,” he said. “Once (consumers) start drinking martinis, they’re not long for this world.”"

And all those beer-swilling tube jockeys are? I suppose the resurgence of microbrews has nothing to do with it. This just reinforces why I've never drank anything from them.

LOL Tube Jockeys . . . I like it!

Can you beleive the arrogance of the Budweiser guy. No A-B products in this house anyway! LOL

Idea for Budweiser's next add campaign - Real Men drink beer.

Scene opens in a nice upscale bar, not trendy. Two fairly well dressed, lanky, unassuming males... think Hollywood's typical portrayal of the french male, entertaining a table of doable American women on the finer points of wine. At the bar sitting together, devoid of female company, are a pair of stocky, ruggedly handsome Rednecks... drinking Bud and stewing over the fact that their dates are fawning over every word of these pretentious pricks. At closing time they sneak out the door early, grab a couple of baseball bats from their pickup truck and wait, they then proceed to beat the two "frenchmen" to a pulp as they exit and shove their "dates" (who are at this point are not only hysterical but also kicking and screaming) into the pickup truck before speeding off. Tag line "Budweiser. Drink Beer, Get the Girl!"

Wrathwilde (who doesn't drink beer)

I think you have real potential in the advertising sector! Somebody call my agent! LOL

It reminds me of the "Dodge Hemi" commercial with the two redneck type guys asking if the truck has a hemi in it. Just stick a Bud and a baseball bat in their hands and have them beat down a couple of upwardly trendy looking LA faux-fantastic looking metrosexuals.

I like it, now who do we talk to about selling the idea? Where's Dmntd, I hear he has industry contacts!

Cheers,

Oskaar

According to the article:

Anheuser-Busch is launching the second phase
of its national “Here’s To Beer” campaign, in
an effort to raise stagnant beer sales, with two
commercials directed by Spike Lee.

[....] “It really underlines what beer is and what
other alcohols are not,” said Bob Lachky, executive
vice president of global industry development for
Anheuser. “Beer has less pretense than the other
forms of alcohol.”

I'm confused! The stuff put out by Anheuser-Busch is supposed to be beer? ;D ;D ;D

*sigh* "Beer has less pretense." Only in a country like the USA, with a short brewing history derailed by Prohibition, could you get away with a statement like that.

Just made a discovery about my beer loving rescue hound. I poured a Sam Adams lager, plus a splash for the Beast since he was making his jaw popping/chop licking sounds meaning he wanted some NOW. I gave him his saucer and went into the living room. The Beast wouldn't touch the saucer. I went back into the kitchen with my mug, whereupon the Beast began to lap up his portion. What do you know? He doesn't like to drink alone. ;D

LOL......yep, they call that stuff beer! Bwahahahahahahahahahaha....NOT!

The BeerHound doesn't like to drink alone? LOL.....smart dog!

Sometimes it's a bit too scary when they act like humans. :o

I raised this one from a one month old puppy, after my wife found him abandoned in an alley. He likes Guinness best of all, just like me. Now, he shows proper drinking manners and won't drink alone. He's four years old and still curls up in my lap. He was doing that the last time I talked with Oskaar over the phone.

If he starts getting interested when I'm playing around with the bodhran, that's going to get *really* scary! :o

Beer and pretense -- an artificial dichotomy, and a cheap marketing ploy! Back in the late 1970's, someone wrote an essay (both too short on time and too lazy to look it up) commenting on USA wines, noting that they weren't "food" wines, i.e., something made to drink by itself but also mean to accompany a meal. At that time, USA winemaking styles were, for the most part, like American cars. Big, bold, and one dimensional in flavor. Kind of like the tail fins on the 1950's cars. That essay struck home. Winemakers took it to heart, and it helped fuel the revolution that pushed USA wines to world class status.

That's what the Anheuser-Busch people are calling "pretense." There's nothing pretentious about knowing about good food, and good wine, and how they work together. Beer isn't about chugging, it's about flavor and tradition. Beer has as much cultural value as French wine at its best. Homebrewers, and microbrewers know this.

Even my rescue hound knows this. He has beer tastes and beer manners. Seriously! I gave him the choice of a Pale Ale and a Guinness, he went for the Guinness. He'll take beer of any kind but when given a choice, he knows what he likes. He even has bar manners, doesn't want to drink alone.

Dare I say it? Anheuser-Busch could learn much from my rescue hound. ;D ;D ;D

No pretense to beer. Well not if you keep brewing a cereal grained, water downed, corn syrup tasting, drink as cold as you can so you can't taste it,cold filtered through a Clydedale, just makes you have to pee and be drunk, beer >:D. Why would there be any pretense.

I honestly don't under stand why they even bother to advertise. Their core drinkers are going to drink that kind of beer whether they ever saw another ad for it again the rest of their lives or not. Really they think that is the only kind of beer there is. Oh yeah there is also Miller, Coors, and if there high class beer drinkers its Labatts or Molson.
I know a hand full of people who have ever heard of Sierra Nevada or Bell's for that much and I live in Michigan or know they make beer in Belgium. Most of them are my friends anyways. Everyone else likes to pound beers and watch the race, game, syncrhonized swimming ;D, etc...
As long as it says Budweiser at every sporting event and there is a sign in the store and Bud in the fridge, its going out the door.
I mean you brew crappy beer and Americans are starting to develop a culture for finer things. And the taste of hops in their ale.
