I agree on the distribution/how many have tried all the beers is a key. Distribution is a huge factor in polls like these, causing the breweries with a more comprehensive distribution operation to garner greater votes than smaller breweries. Stone is a great example. One of the beers that doesn't fit that mold is Pliny.

Personally, I am sick and tired of seeing Pliny the Elder take top prize in this poll year after year. For what it is, there are countless other Double IPA's that are better (both in value and flavor/aroma) than Pliny, IMO. The only reason it is put on the pedestal it enjoys is the lack of availability coupled with things like this poll touting it's supposed superiority.
As someone who works in a retail beer/wine/spirits local shop, perhaps my opinion is skewed by all of the, if I may, "Pliny whores" who seems almost rabid in their quest for a bottle that I deal with on a daily basis. It just bothers me that people get so wrapped up in the hype that they overlook, or even downright dismiss, other great local offerings simply because someone else online raved about how amazing Pliny is. To me, it is a disservice to the growing microbrew industry, especially to smaller and newer outfits who, despite having a potentially dynamite portfolio, get lost in the search for a fresh Pliny. I will grant that not all of these new ventures are any good, and that Pliny is a well made, consistent brew.
My apologies if I've offended, it was not my intent. I do find this poll interesting, and love the work of the Zymurgy staff. This Pliny business is just a peeve of mine, but I don't despise Russian River or it's fans (myself included). I just think my head is going to explode if one more person asks if we carry bottles of Pliny the Younger...:bom:
