Here's a simple recipe for excelent orange or grapefruit (better) liquor. The only problem is to get citruses with peel not protected against rot and mould, as chemicals used for this are harmful.
Itegrents:
1 orange or grapefruit
44 coffee beans
44 teaspoons of sugar
0,5 liter of pure rye vodka 45%

Make 44 incisions on citrus peel and place coffee beans there.Put the fruit to a jar, add sugar and vodka, close it firmly for 44 days. That's all.

This sounds really good! But can you give us a more conventional quantity for the sugar? I'd probably lose count of the teaspoons ::)

Miriam,

I get 2.16872568 decaliters ???

or

0.91666652 cups ??? ???

I think I'd just count 'em all out!

-David

14 2/3 tablespoons! A little less counting! LOL

208.8 grams?!

Maybe round up to a cup? .9 of a cup, so it would be 10% sweeter?! ;D

Oy. I think that I would stick to a scant cup. Unless there is something special about counting out those 44 teaspoons.

Miriam

I have'nt done it for a long time as it is imposible to get in my country oranges with peel not protected with some poisons (before I didn't know about it so I didn't care). As I remember, after some time I measured these teaspoons to make things easier. I know that "teaspoon" is not very accurate measure, but it always worked - the liquor was every time excelent. I hope You will write your opinion after 44 days ;)

Hey WK,
Where abouts are you?
I have a small orange tree in my back yard that is full of nice, organic oranges.
I may have to give this recipe a try, but do you have any idea if Everclear will work? It is 75.5 % ABV.

I've alvays used Polish Vodka "Wyborowa" (ALC.45%). I think, that Everclear might be too strong.

Well,
I started 1 batch with an orange and another with a grapefruit. We are about 2 weeks in the process and it looks good.
My only complaint is that the payoff (500 ml) is sooo little vs. the waiting period :'(
I'll post my results at sampling time ;D

Ted

Well, since I was unsure of which I would like, I made both, one with orange, the other with grapefruit.
I tend to like the orange one, the grapefruit is a bit too bitther for my taste. I think I'll try it with a pomelo, just for fun!
The final *payoff* was slightly less than 750 ml, I did not account for the juice from the fruit.

Ted

Bbear,

So, the grapefruit version didn't turn out to your liking? How was the orange?

-David

Actually,
They are both really good, it's just that I don't care for a robust bitterness. I don't like it in beer either, that's why I brew my own now and cut down the bittering hops time. The coffee might have contributed to the bitterness slightly, but overall, they are good, I might say that the grapefruit...well, let's just say that by the third or fourth shot is not so bitter anymore ;D

Ted

Hey David,
Just had some of this concoction a couple of days ago with my friend. It is GOOD, she liked the grapefruit, I still like the orange better :toothy10:
We decided to make some more and now we have 1 batch each: grapefruit, orange and blood orange.

Cheers,
