Were the Medes named for the drink mead? Did the ancient Iranians drink mead?
 
Also in Greek manuscripts and in Herodotus you'll see reference to cities being Mede-ized. This would happen when a city surrendered to the Medes without a battle and offered them water and earth as supplication. They would be seen as having Mede-ized by other Hellenistic City States.
