Has anyone tried Pirtle Mead? They are a winery in MO. I just opened my first bottle. My wife did not like it at all. She prefers her meads very sweet. This one was self-proclaimed semi-sweet. I enjoyed the taste, but there was an aftertaste that I could not place. It did not spoil the mead tasting experience, but I did notice it with each taste. I also bought a bottle of their Raspberry and Blackberry, which I am anxious to try. I'd be curious to hear what others thought of this brand.

I think they were at the MeadFest but unfortunately I can't place if I tried them or what the experience was like.

I didn't do quite a few things and the MeadFest that I now wish I had. For anyone planning on going I suggest taking a small notepad so that you can record your impressions of each tasting.

I have not tried it yet, but I will very soon. Pirtle is only 20 minutes away from me, and all this time I have been whining there were no mead makers in the area! Hopefully next weekend I can make a trip over there.

You'll have to let me know what you think. I have a bottle of thier Raspberry and Blackberry that I have not tried yet, but will soon! Gotta get back home first! ;)

I would've replied earlier but I had to dig out my notes from the Meadfest.
(That program made for a great place for simple notes.)

From my scribblings, I can see that The Pirtle Still/Sparkling Meads and Blackberry Mead were among my favorites at the Meadfest. The Blackberry flavor in the Blackberry Mead was subtle and not overpowering. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to taste the Raspberry Mead since they were out by the time I got to the table early Friday.

Amazing what you find when you decided to spend the day clearing your desk and start filing everything away from the past few months... ;D

Now all I need to do is get the house decent enough to do another Mead Tasting...

Greetings,

I'm new here, and and REALLY new to the idea of mead making. I have ordered a bottle of Pirtle Missouri Mead but I've not received it yet. Has anyone tried that?

I have been researching mead and I really want to make it. I'm just in the process of learning all the terms and the process itself. I need to buy equipment and ingredients. I was wondering if you really have to buy special yeast, or if just ordinary yeast can be used? Surely they didn't have all different kinds of yeast hundreds of years ago?

Anyway, great forum!!!

You don't necessarily need to have a special yeast. You might check out this recipe (
Ancient Orange, Cinnamon, and Clove). A quick word of warning, this recipe uses non-standard practices, so don't expect every mead you do to be done in the same manner. Most people seem to feel that it turns out quite nice though. I've enjoyed mine.

Thank you so much! That recipe looks awesome. Just perfect for a first timer like me.

Joe's Ancient Mead recipe is a good starter for first time mead makers, and as Aggie mentioned, is a non-"standard" approach to meadmaking.

Here's a link to the Lalvin Yeast Information page, specifically mead basics. Click on the link to: InFerment Newsletter, it's good information. I suggest you read through it, and check the other links too. Then when your inevitable questions arise, try the search tool at the top of this page to see if you can find some posts that are already out there.

Of course that doesn't preclude you from posting a question at any time, it's just a good idea to see if the subject has been discussed before, and if your question has already been answered.

Cheers,

Oskaar

Thank you Oskaar, I'm reading everything I can get my hands on. :)

Many of the posts talk in acronyms. Is there possibly a "key" to all these?

Sveinne

Here's a link to Barat's Mead Page which has a lot of the acronyms you encounter explained.

Check it out.

If you have a specific acronym that you can't find, post it here and well help out where we can.

Cheers,

Oskaar

We received our bottle of Pirtle Missouri Mead on Friday, opened it that night and consumed the whole thing! It was absolutely delicious. Sweet but not heavy. Distinctly different from wine. We really liked it alot.

I've visited Pirtle's in the past and liked their wine. I ordered a raspberry mead online but to my disappointment, Pirtle shipped it to my billing address instead of the shipping address. It sat on an unshaded cement porch all day while the air temperature was 104 degrees. An email complaining of their service went unreplied. I tried it anyway and the taste was acceptable though not great.
