Here's a link to an account of a guy who made this stuff, drank it, and lived to tell the tale. :P

WARNING: This is very funny, but the language is a little rough, in case that's an issue for you. NSFW, I guess.

PS: If an inmate used Bit-O-Honey candies to make one of these, would it qualify as a Prison Mead? ???

That's funny! I have a brother that is a federal correctional officer (he calls it baby sitting :o )

He told me that one time he discovered a bag of prison hooch fermenting on top of the prison kitchen dishwasher... ETOH is one of those forbotten things in prison that can be worth more than there weight in gold... needless to say, the "residents" were not happy when my brother dumped it out.

Pruno

BTW, This stuff is called "Pruno" and is a BIG problem in the prisons. Here in So Cal they've just fired up a pair of Labrador Retrievers to sniff this stuff out. In the first week alone they seized some ungodly number of gallons of the stuff.

They're saying that many of the riots and other gang related actions in stir are related to too much of this stuff circulating within the prison rank and file.

Cheers,

Oskaar

Maybe the choice of breed, Labrador Retriever, is a good idea.

One our rescue hounds (literally -- my wife found him in a back alley as a one month old pup) absolutely loves beer. He likes everything but Guinness is his favorite. Crack open a bottle and he'll start licking his chops so hard they pop.

He seems to be part Labrador Retriever. He's got the Lab head, the whacking hard Lab tail, and Lab impulsiveness.

In spite of what seems to be good taste, he'll stoop to any level for things alcoholic, as I found out during his daily walk one day. We came across a half empty bottle of Bud Light lying in the street, and as soon as the dog got a whiff he starting licking his chops, making his "I want BEER" sounds.

*sigh* Bud Light. And to think, I'd raised him right. ??? :'(

Bet he'd even go for Pruno.

Hey Dan,
Your story reminded me of my buddy's dog. His name was Brandy and at the sound of a popped can he would be in your lap looking for beer. Once we went hunting and left the dog in the car - we just wanted to check the place out. Ah hour or so later we got back to find Brandy drunk - he got in the back, God knows how he got in the cooler, pulled the six pack out and bit the cans. He lapped-up the beer and was in drunken doggie heaven :D

Cheers

The pruno recipes are just too precious. My family will try anything that has a promise of alcohol content and every gathering must have lots of alcohol (we passed around a bottle of Everclear at Christmas -- but we had to move it along quick before it evaporated ;) ). I think I might have to try this one out for the next family disfunction. I think the pruno will fit right in.
