We were at the NorCal Renfaire yesterday and Rabbit's Foot was being served. I spent a truly horrific $8 for a glass of the Raspberry, and although I was robbed, it was tasty. Served cold, it smelled like Raspberry, no honey that we could pick up.

Tasted like Raspberry, too, front and middle. Tart at the end and long afterwards. It reminded me very much of the lambic that I had at a brewpub in LA a few weeks ago, sans carbonation, with that tart-almost-but-not-quite-sour aftertaste. I quite liked it, but it did make me wonder...all the meads I've made so far have that tart at the end taste to them, and, in my extreme ignorance and inexperience, they seem a bit unbalanced to me--too much tart?

If that's good, then the ones that I have going are great!

Anyway it was good. Not too sweet, but not too dry. We all liked it and might have bought more if it weren't so heinously expensive. I winced as I paid my $8 for a small plastic cup of mead, thinking of the many gallons of the stuff I have at home.

They told me that their mead is being carried at BevMo, but I've never seen it at my local shop. I can guarantee that if someone brings this mead to the mead tasting in a couple of weeks, it'll score high.

We went last weekend. We paid $10 for their pomegranate cider (made for the faire only!). It was pretty good. The $8 black cherry cider was not as good as it is in Sunnyvale, undercarbonated. :( The raspberry mead is probably the one I like best, of their meads, though I haven't had the Mead of Poetry yet. Thankfully they seem to have stopped making their dry oaked pear mead, that was not so good.

The only Rabbit's Foot mead that I've ever seen at BevMos down here was their traditional sweet mead. I can't say I was bowled over by it, but it was tasty and reasonably priced. I would love to see BevMo expand their selection of meads, but so far I've had to venture to bottle shops for anything like Redstone, which again is in limited selection. Which just leaves online ordering...bah.

Sorry I kinda ranted there, but it sounds like that raspberry is tasty and I'm sad it's not available here.

Well if your ever up in Carlsbad. The bottle shop next to Pizza Port actually has six types of Redstone available. They even used to have the high end Rabbits Foot Mead, but it was like 30 dollars for a split bottle. Quit tasty though.

Haha, that was the "bottle shop" I was talking about in my post. And as of late, they've only had Redstone's White Pyment, Nectar of the Hops, and one of their berry mels I believe...not exactly the best selection IMHO. I recently made a hopped mead that was miles ahead of their Nectar of the Hops, which was the inspiration for my batch. Plus it's a "hydromel". Not my cup of tea.

But yeah, Port's bottle shop is amazing. My friend and I found a cuvee in there, no price, sitting on a shelf all alone. Since it was under a tag (probably left from whatever was there before) saying $10.99, we got a deal. Then we read the bottle...started Sept 1994, bottled Jan 1995...15 year old cuvee for $11!! It was quite tasty and had a cork and crown cap. We saved the conditioning yeast and are starting a sour batch currently. Sorry this got off topic! I just thought I'd share. I'll keep an eye out for the Rabbit's Foot next time I go.

I just found Rabbit's Foot Raspberry and their Apple Cyser at Whole Foods! What a surprise I had today when I stopped in for lunch and ended up spending $70...worth every penny.

A bar I went to on Friday had a shelf in the cold case with cider, mead, and Diabhal! I actually picked up a bottle of Redstone since I've never had that before. I wonder if Rabbit's Foot is distributing Hel yet... (if you haven't had it and see it, get it and thank me later.)

Redstone is pretty tasty. Some of their meads tend to lean towards "hydromels", but overall, the honey character has been pretty pleasant in each one I've tried. My favorites are the Apricot Nectar, the Juniper Berry metheglin, and the Nectar of the Hops...granted, I've only tried about 6 of their products, but still. :)

Also, I'll keep a sharp eye out for Hel. Thanks for the tip. Hehe
